First, expect more silence. If you attend a Low Mass (recited) you will hear the readings and some of the prayers uttered by the priest. The Roman Canon (Eucharistic prayer) is recited in low voice. At a High Mass, however, you will hear the priest chanting and cantors singing the different parts of the Mass.
POSTURE
The priest faces East, towards the rising sun and Calvary, whenever he addresses the Father. Words directed to the people alone, including the homily, are said facing the people.
The Eucharist is given on the tongue while kneeling. Holy Communion cannot be received on the hand. As the priest approaches the communicant he says a brief prayer "Corpus Domini Nostri Jesu Chrisit, custodiat animam tuam in vitam eternam Amen". May the Body of Christ, preserve your soul into eternal life. Amen." The communicant does not say anything. It is best to close your eyes, open your mouth and stick your tongue out over your bottom lip and wait for the host to be placed on your tongue.
THE PARTICPATION OF THE FAITHFUL
Coming to the Latin Mass for first time can be intimidating. 'What if I don't know what to do? What if people notice me doing the wrong thing? I don't want to feel out of place' . Not to worry. Sit behind someone and follow along as best you can and do not hesitate to ask questions after Mass. There are paperback missals available at the entrance to help guide you. Even if you find yourself lost, what is most important is that you participate with your heart, mind and soul by uniting your prayers and sacrifices with the one true sacrifice on the altar.
