Do we need to pay the priest? Family members often think they have to give a monetary gift to the priest. While this is kind gesture, it is not necessary. Father Slezak does not expect anything for celebrating a funeral. If you would like to make give him anything, that is entirely up to you. If you would like to make a donation to the Church, please consider giving to the church restoration fund to maintain thist beautiful church.
What are the costs associated with funerals? All expenses for the funeral Mass are handled by the funeral director.
Can someone from the family give a Eulogy at the Mass? No. The Funeral Mass is a sacred event full of signs and symbols that communicate what we beleive. The central focus of the Mass is the Paschal Mystery - that is, the suffering, death and Resurrection of Christ. At Mass we look towards the future with hope, anticipating eternal life that has been prepared for children of God. To speak only of the deceased's life in the past is to speak as if they are no more. That is not our beleif. Fr. Slezak will do his best to incorporatethe life of the deceased into his homily in light of our beliefs. A more appropriate time to offer words of rememberance would be at the Wake Service.
I would to receive Holy Communion, but have not been to church in a while. What should I do? Inform Father when you speak to him or at the Wake service that you would like to go to Confession.
